The space between things
We fill in the spaces between things, connecting associations in invisible linkages, linkages that are in truth, empty.
Space is always present but in the post-assembled world, we tend to miss its significance. In new things, new ventures, new ideas, new relationships, the space between what might be and what is is palpable and physically manifest. The space between is the field of potential. It is awkward, void, and promises anything, everything, nothing.
Compositions are a process of differentiation of visual space. Even the most austere of modern artists; Rothko, James Turrell, Donald Judd, Joseph Kosuth, Josef Albers, their emphasis is space, the openness of voids. Ironically the openness of space and void cannot be perceived without compositional lines of enclosure. The process of realization of a thing is the dance of space and boundary.
The space between things is a conceptual holy grail, perhaps the greatest work is made of nothing at all. Alas, for others to participate, we must enclose it, make it distinguishable, cut space from space, and create a moment of that contemplation crystalized as a work of art.
Space is the magic giving a composition it’s dynamics and rhythmic tension. Density often descends into my work like a rock slide, filling space with the weight of the world, with the confluence of individuated ideas, parts of our life. It is almost a spiritual discipline to preserve some uncontaminated presence, a space unburdened by the many.
Let me see what kind of space can expand, and can expel the onslaught of complexity that is our life in these times.
